North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos’ coach Scott Gowans says he’s 'super-proud' of his players’ inaugural season in the AFL Women’s competition.
While North won’t be playing finals after a defeat at the hands of Fremantle on Saturday, there's no doubting five wins and two losses is an outstanding effort from a first-year team.
“We had a really good crack at it and I’m super-proud of the players,” Gowans said post-match.
“We just couldn’t get anything going our way (today).
“We had a few players that played really good games, but that’s credit to the 21 players that played for Fremantle today.”
Gowans thoughts echoed by captain Emma Kearney.
“I’m super-proud of the effort from the girls,” she said.
“Last year when I won a premiership (at the Bulldogs), we lost two games. We lost two games this year.
“We’ve got half the list who’d never played AFLW, so they’ve now had a taste of it. It’s a great experience. They’ll learn and grow and develop and be back better and stronger next year.”
The much talked about conference system saw the Roos finish third in Conference A with 20 points, while the top team in Conference B had just 12, with one game remaining.
But Gowans won’t be reflecting on what could have been.
“We spoke about it right from the start and we knew exactly what the conference system was,” he said.
“At the end of the day we’ve lost to Fremantle and Adelaide by a little bit both times, and I think that’s a true reflection of where we’re at.
“It is what it is – it’s not like it was made up two weeks ago. We can’t control that.
“It was pretty simple today; we had to win to make it and we didn’t.
“There’s no way the AFL sat there and thought ‘how can we not have the best teams playing in the finals system?’. It is what it is. Of course we’re disappointed because we lost, but we had control of the outcome today and we just couldn’t get it done.
“Next year we’ll have a review and see what happens, but whatever they come up with is exactly what we’ll go with.”
