If Brent Harvey wants to play on in 2016, the ball is well and truly in his court according to Brad Scott.
Speaking on Channel 9 following the side’s win over Carlton, the Roos coach said the North veteran has being playing his role for the team and doing what was asked of him by the coaches since being handed the substitute vest.
“If he keeps doing what he’s doing, I want him to play on,” Scott said.
Harvey now sits third on the VFL/AFL games played list after running out for the 401st time on Saturday night.
If he gets another contract, he’ll be a chance to break Michael Tuck’s 426 game record but Scott said fairytales won’t be considered when a decision is made either way.
“The individual never comes before the club. It’s a romantic notion that’s going to be spoken about a lot that there’s a potential record there,” Scott said.
“Once the club starts putting the individual ahead of the club then you’re on the spiral downwards. I’m genuinely hopeful the best decision will be made for both.
At 37, Harvey has shown no signs of slowing down, averaging 24 disposals from 17 games, and is still being tagged by the opposition.
Brisbane’s Daniel Rich had the job last week and Ed Curnow was charged with stopping ‘Boomer’ for the Blues.
“At the moment, he’s playing terrific footy and we’ve won the last four games. If that continues, hopefully it’s a good outcome for everyone,” Scott said.
“We go through a process — in all my time at North — around about this (time of) year where we start talking about next year.
“We’ve talked about it and there are certain things that (Harvey) has got to do to make sure that physically he’s right to go and that he’s playing a role for the team.”
Harvey has spoken on several occasions about his desire to play on with the lure of a premiership the key motivator.
“He wants to play for team success and if he can play a part in that, he’ll play on,” Scott suggested.
“But if he can’t, he won’t.”
