Just hours out from his comeback match from a hamstring injury, Mason Wood knew something wasn’t quite right.
He’d completed training on Saturday and was due to line up for Werribee in a practice match against the Northern Blues the following day, but woke up with a knee complaint.
“[I] Just felt a little bit of soreness, a bit of restricted movement, that kind of thing and then just went to see the physios and they’re like, ‘Well, this isn’t normal, we need to go and get it scanned’,” Wood told NMFC.com.au.

Medical imaging confirmed a problem completely unrelated to the hamstring injury which had sidelined him for the start of the season.
“They found a little bit of chipped off bone in my knee from an old surgery that I had in my first year. Luckily it’s not in a weight-bearing area so they didn’t have to really do anything to the knee, just flush out a little bit of bone and then we’ll be right to go.”
Wood had the procedure on Tuesday afternoon and was back at Arden Street on Wednesday morning to begin another block of rehabilitation.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve played AFL footy so any sort of setback is disapponting but as far as setbacks go, this won’t be much and I’ll be back out there as soon as possible.”
He expects his recovery to take two-to-three weeks.
“Basically just waiting for the scars to heal so once they do, I’ll be right to go so I’ll be itching to get back out there because it’s been such a long time,” Wood said.
And as for the hamstring, the number 32 says it’s completely healed.
“100 per cent fine now and I guess you get a couple of extra weeks to make sure that is as good as gold,” Wood added.
All going to plan, Wood should be back in the royal blue and white by Round 7.
