North Melbourne selected versatile tall Brynn Teakle with pick No.15 in Wednesday night's 2024 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.
Here are five things you should know about our newest Kangaroo.
1. He arrives with AFL experience under his belt
The athletic big man will be no stranger to the demands and rigours of AFL life, having already experienced what it's like to play at the highest level possible. The 24-year-old was scooped up in the 2022 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft by Port Adelaide, before going on to play six games for the Power across 2022 and 2023.
2. He earned state selection this year
After averaging 15.7 disposals and 35.2 hitouts for East Fremantle this season, Teakle's strong start to 2024 saw him rewarded with an opportunity to represent the WAFL in a state v state clash against the SANFL. While the SANFL team won the match, Teakle enjoyed a solid day as one of the WAFL's best afield, finishing with 20 touches, 16 hitouts and five marks.
3. He's a product of the Northampton footy factory
Hailing from the small farming community of Northampton in Western Australia, Teakle is one of 11 players from the town to make it to the AFL/W. The mid-west town of fewer than 1000 people sits 470 kilometres north of Perth has managed to punch above its weight when it comes to churning out talent. Premiership Eagles Daniel Chick, Josh Kennedy and Jamie Cripps are Northampton natives, as are Patrick Cripps, Liam Anthony, Paul Hasleby, Andrew and Tarkyn Lockyer, and Harry Taylor. Teakle became the 10th member of the town to reach the competition, while his cousin Julia became the 11th when she was signed by Port Adelaide in the AFLW.
4. He went from state-league ruck to Power debutant in 17 days
It was something of a meteoric rise for the 204cm talent when he first entered the AFL. After being taken with the eighth pick of the mid-season draft, Teakle made an instant impact at Alberton and was promptly called upon to feature for the club against the Swans at Adelaide Oval in Round 14, 2022. The ruck impressed in the opening quarter and sustained a collarbone injury in the second, but it didn't dampen his outlook post-game. "The nurses were like, 'Are you alright?' and I said, 'I'm alright, I'm still over the moon, I debuted today'," Teakle told The West Australian afterwards.
5. He's a ready-to-go option
Teakle will enter Arden Street as a readymade tall. Capable of winning the ruck battle, following up at ground level, taking big grabs inside forward 50 and hitting the scoreboard, the mid-season pick will be raring to back-up North Melbourne's current big men immediately. "He's going to provide us a really good option in a ready-to-go sense," national recruiting and retention manager Will Thursfield told NMFC Media.
