The AFL's Match Review Panel handed Thompson 80 demerit points, with 60 carry-over points taking him up to 140 and a one-match ban.
Even with an early guilty plea (25% deduction), Thompson would receive 105 demerit points and be outed for a week.

Scott Thompson, North Melbourne, has been charged with a Level One striking offence (80 demerit points) for striking Travis Cloke, Collingwood, during the first quarter of the Round Five match between North Melbourne and Collingwood played at the MCG on Saturday April 19, 2014.
In summary, due to his previous poor record he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.
Based on speaking with the umpire, the video evidence available and a medical report from the Collingwood Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 80 demerit points. He has a bad record of 60 demerit points carried over within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 140 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 105 points and a one-match sanction.
