NMFC Hop to It
Major employer Nyrstar has teamed with North Melbourne to deliver an Australian first program ‘Nyrstar Hop To It Tasmania’.
Club chief executive officer Carl Dilena said the organisations have a common ambition to nurture young, at-risk Tasmanians and provide stable and rousing environments for them to develop and aspire.
“Essentially the program will see the children able to interactively learn through our players and Neighbourhood House volunteers about the importance of health, nutrition, physical activity and how engagement in this creates the balance necessary to support better academic learning and a positive lifestyle,” Dilena said.
“Nyrstar has its own health and well-being program on site with a dedicated team of people including two General Practitioners, so safety and the welfare of their employees is evidently paramount. These values are directly aligned with North Melbourne as we both understand the power the right culture and lifestyle has and our club is very proud of our community improvement activities.”
Brad Scott said the values underpinning the North team centred on a vision to inspire excellence on and off the field.
“Our culture is not something you leave on the field, it is resonated through the way we are as a playing group and reflected through the broad range of programs we do to improve the lifestyles and experiences of our community,” Scott said.
“Partnerships with industry, business and the community are vital to building an inspired country where we can come together for a benefit with immeasurable value.”
A very unique component to the partnership will include frontline leadership training of Nyrstar’s operations and maintenance team leaders by Scott and other North coaches.
“We draw on best practice mentoring, coaching and motivational leadership to drive our team’s culture and performance. This is highly relevant for workplaces and Nyrstar has demonstrated how sincere its commitment is to supporting its leadership and cultural development and we are proud to add value to their existing program.”
General Manager Nyrstar Hobart Jeremy Kouw said Tasmania’s high unemployment rate required a collaborative approach and influencing the next generation to understand the connection between healthy and active lifestyles to inspire learning and commitment was integral to shaping the future of the state.
"Through the Neighbourhood Houses the ‘Nyrstar Hop To It Tasmania’ program will provide information, equipment and inspiring role models in the North Melbourne players to deliver key messages around the importance of goal setting and health and well-being,” Mr Kouw said.
“The players will speak to the children about how they goal set for their games and football careers – but importantly also for life after football and openly discuss the types of jobs they will pursue. This partnership will see the players connecting with students and working through a vision and pathway together.”
Mr Kouw said Nyrstar would personally conduct ten of the sessions on-site with direct local schools, providing opportunity for employees to be involved in sharing their stories and allowing students to experience and learn from a broad range of careers.
“As Tasmania’s leading exporter by value and a window to the international economy bringing new money to the State, we know how important it is to sustain and grow industry to support the future of jobs in the State, as well as provide inspirational pathways for young Tasmanians to understand the rewards and benefits of having a job,” he said.
“Together with our investments underway to improve environmental outcomes which have been significant, and on their own have contributed to greater economic activity and benefit for the Tasmanian economy, our employees are very proud of our ongoing commitment to Tasmania’s future.”
