After every round for the remainder of the 2014 season, NMFC.com.au will search the major media outlets for all that is being said about the weekend’s performance.
Much of the talk after North’s huge win over Brisbane was the performance of 36-year-old Brent Harvey, while Sam Gibson also came in for special praise.
The Herald Sun - Mark Robinson
“Training run for the Kangaroos against Brisbane, highlight mainly by Boomer Harvey yet again and the successful return of Andrew Swallow. Want to add Dal Santo. People talk of Polec and Franklin as recruits of the year, but it’s difficult to ignore the former Sainter. He’s averaging close to 29 disposals a game and is a SuperCoach constant, not that it would worry him either way. As for the Kangas, it’s Geelong away and West Coast away, so once again the challenge is upon them.”
The Age - Rohan Connolly
“Harvey's first major was merely tangible acknowledgement of North Melbourne's dominance and the lop-sided contest that was to follow. And so it proved.
“Robin Nahas continues to add something to the mix with his speed and tackling pressure. And the sheer excitement provided by the magnificent athletic specimen that is Majak Daw. The latter might have finished with four or five goals had his kicking boots been on, but what was clear enough is that he has plenty to offer.”
The Herald Sun - Warwick Green
“The Kangaroos were rarely put under pressure by a badly undermanned Lions outfit, but on a day when the players could easily have cruised, they instead applied some fanatical pressure skills on every line.
“Sam Gibson produced his fifth 30-plus possessions game of the season, and at times was wonderfully creative in the way he used his disposals.”
AFL.com.au - Nathan Schmook
“Harvey was sensational for the Kangaroos, running free to rack up 39 possessions and kick two goals, showing up his younger opponents with a tireless work-rate.
“Substituted in his two previous games for North Melbourne, and named emergency twice this season, it's been hard for Robin Nahas to gain momentum this year. His chance should come, however, after a strong performance against the Brisbane Lions, perfectly complementing goalkicker Lindsay Thomas in attack. Nahas finished with 22 possessions, eight tackles and a team-high eight inside 50s against the Lions, quite rightly avoiding the red vest. The cream on top of a hard-working performance was a perfect bullet pass across his body to Thomas in the second quarter.”
The Age - Matt Murnane
“We expected North's midfield to bat deeper this year, and maybe find another match-winner or two. But how many thought that Gibson would be going this close to adding the same on-field impact as Nick Dal Santo? The former Saint is probably one of the reasons Gibson has elevated his game. With Dal Santo, Jack Ziebell, Daniel Wells, Brent Harvey, Ben Cunnington and now Andrew Swallow for opposition teams to attend to, Gibson has slipped under the radar and made his opponents pay.
“Gibson has always been a big ball-winner and he has continued that in 2014, gathering another 35 disposals against Brisbane on Saturday for his fifth 30-plus possession game for the year. He ranks second in the AFL for uncontested possessions, and third for handball receives – an indicator of his exhaustive commitment to keep spreading from the contest. But if accumulating the ball is one thing, then inflicting enough damage on your opponent to be classed as a match-winner is another step up. And that is where the former rookie draft selection has emerged as a surprise packet, showing he can take that step in the club's biggest victory in years – the round six triumph against Fremantle. Gibson helped silence the hostile Perth crowd with the best game of his career, kicking two crucial goals to go with his 31 disposals.”
