UPDATE: Drew Petrie has missed out on a nomination despite arguably the best season of his career.

Finishing fifth in the Coleman Medal with 58 goals for the season and earning a spot in the 40-man All Australian squad wasn't enough for Petrie to join Swallow, Thompson and Wells in Sheahan's top 50.

What's your view on Petrie's omission? Where do you rank the co-vice captain? Have your say below.

------------------------------------------
Andrew Swallow
, Scott Thompson and Daniel Wells have been listed in Mike Sheahan’s top 50 players despite the trio being shunned by the respected football writer in the pre-season.

Despite retiring from the Herald Sun as chief football writer, Sheahan opinion is still one of the most highly regarded and his bi-annual Top 50 list always creates a stir.

Dropping two spots from his post 2011 ranking, Sheahan ranked North captain Andrew Swallow at 31 in the AFL after he put in another stellar season. Leading the club statistics with an impressive 164 tackles, it’s no wonder Shehan labeled the midfielder a “tackling machine.”

“Still a slight query on his pace and kicking, but his work-rate is phenomenal and he is a clearance gun,” Sheahan said of Swallow.

After a career best season, Scott Thompson has finally received the recognition he deserves, coming in 34 and making Sheahan’s list for the first time.

“Definitely should have been in the All-Australian squad of 40. High-quality defender who excels in intercept marking. Keeps his cool these days, too,” Sheahan commented.

Daniel Wells slipped from 34 at the end of 2011 to 41 this year. The 27-year old Syd Barker medal winner put a limited pre-season behind him and missed just three games.

“Came of age this year before a late leg injury that interrupted North's momentum. Averaged 22 possies a week and is a sweet ball-carrier and user,” Sheahan said.

With only 31-50 revealed, the remaining places will be released later in the week with a lot of interest around Drew Petrie. The vice-captain was rated at number 45 in the pre-season count.
