It’s hard to argue there’d be a player on North’s list more frustrated than Tom Curran. Since being selected in the 2011 National Draft, the young draftee has spent most of his time on the sidelines, unable to train due to a foot injury.

But now, kangaroos.com.au can reveal he’s about to be unleashed.

“I’ve been told I’m right to play this week,” a delighted Curran said before training on Thursday.

“I’ll be with the North Ballarat Reserves playing on Sunday against Casey. I’m pretty excited.”

Curran hit the Aegis Park track with an extra spring in his step and even completed a solid session on the marking bag toward the end of the session and it’s little wonder.

The 18-year old had to wear a moon-boot for 15 weeks when he discovered his initial injury.

“A week before the AFL Grand Final I played in the TAC Cup Final with Oakleigh. I played but had actually broken my foot the week before it. I didn’t know it was broken at the time obviously and went into a moon-boot during Draft Camp and saw a specialist who put me into a plaster cast,” Curran explained.

“In all, it was about four months in the boot and I was on crutches for about six or seven of those weeks, so it was a bit crazy.”

Curran says North’s medical staff took a cautious approach to his injury.

“I’m only 18 so there’s plenty of time and we didn’t need to rush back. It’s best to look after it (foot) well now and hopefully it’ll never bother me again.”

The key position prospect’s work in the gym during his on-field hiatus is reflected in his bulkier frame.

“I’ve put on five kilos since I got here and I now weigh about 95 kilos which is good. I’ll be hoping to use that to my advantage in games if I can which will be a lot different to last time I played.”

Asked where he prefers to play, Curran’s answer is simple.

“Out on the park is where I like playing,” he joked.

“I’ve been a forward for most of my time but last year I played as a defender and really enjoyed it. I love going for marks whether that’s forward or back, it doesn’t really bother me.

“I’m here to play footy and when you’re injured, you’re not doing that so the quicker I can get out there and play, I can start pushing for selection in the VFL seniors and then hopefully AFL down the track. That’s good for me, but also good for the team if there’s heaps of guys up and about looking to break in to the side.”
