Gilbert Gardiner from the Herald Sun followed Brent Harvey and Luke McDonald during the 2014 pre-season to get an insight to what makes each man tick; one approaching the twilight of his career and the other just beginning.

In the third and final part, it’s all about the last few weeks before Round 1. Here is a selection of the best quotes from both players:

McDonald on playing Hawthorn in the NAB Challenge

"It was good just to sort of sit back and see how they do it.

"They smashed us (but) it was a good learning experience. They were just too good with their foot skills, they cut us up through the middle and especially being down back it was a real baptism of fire.

"If anything it makes you want to beat them even more because they're such well known players.

"I just tried to go in that little bit harder and try and not give him an inch. It was awesome.

"He's (Cyril Rioli) just so fast, I just couldn't take my eyes off him so it was good to play on him.

"I put him on par with Lindsay Thomas out at training, Lindsay's really hard to play on at training and so is Cyril.

"You can't give them an inch or else they'll take it and you can't take it back they're so fast."

Harvey on the build up to Round 1

"You've done the hard yards, you've played a couple of (practice) games but mainly you've got through another really big pre-season.

"This year's been no different; it's just been a massive pre-season.

"We've just got to make sure we all go out there and enjoy it, I'll be no different in my 19th season, I'll enjoy it just as much as I did in my first season because that's what footy's about - getting out there and playing."

Harvey on selection dilemmas

"Every player should go out with pressure on himself to perform because that makes the team better and you've got a better chance of winning.

"You feel for those guys (on the cusp).

"There's a lot of sleepless nights, when you go to bed you just want to know if you're playing, unfortunately 46 doesn't go into 22 so Brad (Scott) and his coaching staff have got a dilemma.

"I think this is the first year for a long time we bat a little deeper. There will be a lot of stiff blokes that performed pretty well over the pre-season and won't get a game - that's just a reality though.

"What they've got to do is go back and perform in the VFL and make sure they put pressure on every single other player on the team because that's what good teams do.

"There is pressure from underneath to hold your spot and you've got to perform well - great teams have that and they're the ones who win the flag."

Harvey on his first game

"I remember driving home and pulling into the driveway with a big smile on my face, I think they knew straight away without me even saying a word, that I was going to play.

"I came on halfway through the second quarter for five minutes, then I came on for five minutes in the third quarter and then another five minutes in the last quarter.

"I actually thought, 'About bloody time', it took me a couple of goes to get it, it bounced straight up to me and Kingy (David King) was running past.

"I just wanted to get it out of my hands.

"(Coach) Denis Pagan was a tough taskmaster and I didn't want to stuff anything up and be the person that turned the ball over and get a goal kicked against me."

McDonald on training with Harvey

"I'm 19 and he's (Harvey) going into his 19th year of playing AFL so it's sort of freaky.

"When you're training with him out there you don't even think about how many years experience he's got, but when you do sit back (and think) it's amazing.

"He's just a freak, he's once in a generation sort of player."

"You would have thought after 19 years he'd be sick of it, but he loves it.

"That's (his secret) he's so passionate about it, he's so passionate about North Melbourne and obviously wants us to do so well."

McDonald on settling in

"I've gone all right at the level, people can say you're going to go well when you get drafted high and all that, but until you're actually out there and can prove to yourself you can play well that's when it sinks in.

"It's been pretty smooth but pre-season is pre-season, I'd rather have five touches in each pre-season game and gets lots of it in the (home-and-away) season than vice versa."
