North Melbourne’s push for an AFL stadium in Ballarat is gaining more momentum after a 22 member consortium was formed to push for a proposed $80 million Ballarat Sport and Entertainment Precinct.

The powerful group consists of thirteen sporting organisations including the North Melbourne Football Club, two state government and seven local bodies.

The Ballarat Courier reported CEO of the Ballarat City Council Anthony Schinck described the proposed precinct as “much more than a sports stadium”.

“The project, if realised, will also develop the only indoor exhibition facility in regional Victoria at this scale, creating a significant competitive advantage for Ballarat and the surrounding Central Highlands region,” Schinck told The Courier.

“In addition, this development can be leveraged to deliver improved community facilities for local sports clubs and new recreation opportunities.

“As Ballarat continues to grow, there is a clear development opportunity for the Northern Oval sports precinct to be developed and positioned as a world-class major sports, events and entertainment precinct.”

The elite sporting facility will house a 10,000 seat grandstand, 3,000 square metre flexible viewing area, indoor exhibition facility and administration areas.

The local Ballarat Basketball and Netball associations are also hoping to be involved with a possible multimillion dollar indoor basketball and netball stadium.

The formation of this influential consortium is another step in the right direction with North Melbourne and the Ballarat City Council aiming to bring AFL games to the Ballarat region.
