The Huddle’s girls’ academy has had its biggest test yet, playing in a new Victorian competition for girls aged between 9 and 12. The Western Region Football League saw 40 girls from four teams come together at Holland Park in Kensington for its inaugural round.

Australian Football is the fastest growing sport for girls in the country and teams are based in junior clubs around the region in partnership with Melbourne University’s Women’s Football Club.

Chyloe Kurdas, Female Football Development Manager at AFL Victoria, said the Under-12 competition was an important part of an all-inclusive footballing strategy.

“This competition will complete the female pathway for girls and women to play our game,” said Kurdas.

"AFL Victoria believes it’s important to provide girls with an all female space to play and enjoy the game.

“These Under-12 competitions are primarily geared towards developing our game to a standard where in ten years time we have a national televised female competition, and these girls will be the foundation of this competition.”

For the players, the excitement was all about playing - not about how the game might evolve.

“To be able to play footy against other girls, it’s brilliant,” said one lucky participant.
