North Melbourne has held back Andrew Swallow from flying to Utah after a re-assessment of his Achilles injury.

The Kangaroos captain reported some discomfort to club doctor Andrew McMahon and his specialist which resulted in new scans being carried out.  However it's far from a setback.

"Andrew experienced some soreness so we determined it was best to re-scan and review the injury with his specialist," McMahon said.

"The results of the scan this week were extremely good and we will continue to monitor his situation day-by-day and assess the best way forward for Andrew."

Swallow ruptured his Achilles in the Round 18 match against Melbourne at Etihad and was immediately operated on but is expected to miss the start of the 2014 season.

Swallow's team-mates flew to Utah last Friday but the 26-year-old was a notable absentee.

The club was forced to take a new direction with Swallow's recovery having planned to include him in the camp.  A few weeks ago, coach Brad Scott outlined the way forward for the midfielder with Utah a big part of his fitness program.  However with doctor McMahon and Swallow's specialist conducting regular reviews of the injury, it was decided to keep him back home where he's more comfortable and able to achieve more gains.

"We feel the best place for his rehabilitation program is back here in Melbourne for the time being," McMahon added.

Intent on keeping his mind on footy, Swallow attended Werribee training on Monday night to help out new head coach and former North development coach John Lamont.

“It was great to have him down at training and I’m sure it gave the boys a bit of an early boost with pre-season underway,” Lamont commented.

“He did some work with our midfielders and Andrew knows, he’s more than welcome to come and help out anytime.”
