North Melbourne draftee Bailey Scott has been rewarded for his outstanding AFL debut, named as this week’s NAB AFL Rising Star.
Scott was one of the few shining lights on what was a tough day for the Roos on Sunday, earning 21 disposals and kicking two goals on debut.
The 18-year-old looked experienced and composed beyond his years.
“He was good, he just played as we knew he would,” North coach Brad Scott said post-match.
“While this is his first game, he’s been working towards this stage for this for three or four years.
“Our instruction to him was to just do as you’ve been doing through the pre-season, and he did it again today.
"He's a great role model for other young players because he's a great preparer. He's a thorough professional.”
While North fans quickly became aware of the wingman’s potential during the JLT Community Series, Sunday’s performance brought him to the attention of the wider football community.
After an impressive first quarter, in which he collected ten disposals, the commentators were quick to sing his praises.
“One of the positives (for North) has been Bailey Scott, he’s really led the way,” Anthony Hudson said on Fox Footy’s coverage.
“He’s been the most composed player out there for the Kangaroos in his first game,” David King added.
“He’s just popping up in the right spot.
“He’s getting the ball in very damaging areas of the ground.”
With his father, 1996 premiership player Robert Scott, in attendance at Optus Stadium, Bailey started his career in style.
“His old man would be proud,” Hudson said.
“He’ll be loving what his young fella is doing today,” King added.
