North Melbourne star Jy Simpkin has lauded the efforts of father-son defender Jackson Archer after the opening training session of 2023, which featured a 1.8km shuttle run.
Simpkin re-claimed the time trial crown after backing up his early December run with another outstanding effort in warm conditions on Monday morning.
"It's always good to know when you put in the work and you get a few results on day one, but most of the boys ran pretty well," Simpkin mentioned.
"I ran next to 'Arch' (Jackson Archer) and he pushed me all the way."
A fearless half-back flanker who managed three games in his debut season, Archer triumphed in the opening shuttle run last November, beating out his first-to-fourth-year counterparts.
Impressed with his work ethic, Simpkin referenced the determination the 20-year-old has been showing since the conclusion of the 2022 season as the young gun eyes down more senior playing time in 2023.
"I was coming in here most days (during the off-season) and he (Archer) was one guy that was in here pretty much every single day getting better, training hard, and now the rewards are coming out," the midfielder stated.
"But it's not only his running, his football skills and his game sense is all going to another level so I'm really looking forward to what he can do this season."
Along with Archer, there were some other Roos Simpkin thought kicked 2023 off well.
"LMac (Luke McDonald) … (I) think he improved his time by a fair bit, 'Howey' (Daniel Howe) was good," he said.
"I was too buggered to be honest by the end of it to see where anyone else was finishing, but there's a few boys who all beat their time, so it's impressive."
