Charlie Comben says that he's looking forward to creating a dangerous partnership with Nick Larkey in 2023.

The 199cm key position player joined North Melbourne's list in late 2019 and is now right on the verge of being the side's second forward line target, which is something he is determined to become.

"Yeah (becoming that second option) is something I've strived for over the last three years, but I haven’t had to opportunity to do that yet (due to injury)," Comben told North Media.

"It's really exciting to finally get two key forwards up there next year that can work with each other.

"'Larks' (Larkey) and I get along really well, and he's put a lot of work into me and helped me developed my game so that's exciting as well."

Despite booting 19 goals from a nine-game stint in the VFL this year, Comben struggled with injuries and only featured once for the Kangaroos at AFL level.

However, the 21-year-old has since been able to put those issues behind him and is pleased to be back training at full capacity.

"It's great," he mentioned.

"I felt really confident in my body (through the back end of last season) and I felt like I was ready to go, but I just had a hiccup from a prior surgery.

"The way I look at it, I didn't really sustain another injury last year, so this year I should be ready to play a full season, hopefully in the ones."

First-to-fourth-year Roos returned to training earlier this week for their first official session of the pre-season and first under new senior coach Alastair Clarkson.

"It's quite surreal having grown up watching him and now, in reality, he's our coach," said Comben.

"Obviously he's really knowledgeable and he really captures your attention, so it's going to be special."
