Roosters register first win
North Ballarat registered its first win of the 2009 season, with a 14-point victory over Sandringham in windy conditions at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday.
The Roosters benefited from the unpredictable conditions in the first half, as Sandringham ran harder and carried the ball through the middle, before falling down across half forward.
North Ballarat were inspired by Corey Jones on either side of half time as he kicked two vital goals from tough positions. From there, it was the Roosters with the likes of North Melbourne rookie Marcus White, who ran harder and took control of the game.
Jones, dropped from the AFL this week, played a vital role across the ground as the Roosters ran out winners 8.8.(56) to 6.6.(42) .
Sandringham's Nicholas Sautner continued his goal kicking form, kicking three of Sandringham's six goals.
The windy conditions made skills difficult across the ground but the Roosters, kicking with a slight breeze, led by 9 points at the first break.
The Zebras opened the second term with quick goals through Luke Miles and Rennie Gilchrist, but late goals from Tristan Cartledge and a superb 50 metre goal from Jones gave the Roosters an eleven point half time lead.
When Tom Roach and Jones kicked 2 goals in the opening 3 minutes of the third term, North Ballarat looked beyond touching distance.
But Sautner kicked a couple on either side of three quarter time to give his side hope, before kickable goals were missed by St Kilda listed players Eljay Conners and Raphael Clarke in the final quarter.
Sandringham captain Peter Summers, Xavier Clarke and Andy Biddlecombe continued their excellent starts to the season, providing run and carry in difficult conditions.
For the Roosters, Corey Jones looked a class above as he worked his way into the contest and Brett Goodes and North Melbourne rookie Marcus White were important.
