1. Adams courage, Harper goal
Just 50 seconds remained in the first term when Leigh Adams was forced to put his body on the line, running with the flight of the ball. He’s never been one to flinch and it was no surprise he threw himself fearlessly at the contest against Heath Scotland. Scotland gets to his feet first and runs onto the football, but Adams’ second effort tackle is enough to ensure his opponent’s handball misses its target. Michael Firrito gathers at half-back and brushes an opponent before dishing to Daniel Wells, but the danger hadn’t passed until Adams makes one more effort with a terrific shephard.
Wells’ pass lands on the chest of Drew Petrie who found space at half-forward. Kieran Harper has worked hard out of defence, and receives a handball before running away from Lachlan Henderson and kicking a great goal from the 50 metre arc.
2. Macmillan spoil, Hansen goal
23-points behind, the Blues are desperate for a goal. Henderson’s kick across goal is seemingly a safe one, but his team-mate Dennis Armfield doesn’t sense his opponent close by. Jamie Macmillan spoils, but Armfield re-gathers. His handball is off target and puts Andrew Collins under pressure. Enter Leigh Adams again who lays a great tackle. Harper roves the crumbs and snaps cleverly into the path of Lachlan Hansen, who despite missing the mark, snaps an important goal and brings the crowd to its feet.
3. Wells roving goal
Carlton has regained some ascendency in the third term and is closing fast thanks to the efforts of Chris Judd. Andrew Swallow puts it to the advantage of Hansen who uses his smarts to knock the ball to the front. Wells swoops at full tilt, puts the ball to his advantage and has the presence of mind to throw the ball onto his left foot and extend the margin to five goals.
4. Thomas goal from the boundary
Barely a minute after the Wells goal, North is on the attack again. Hansen kicks on his left foot inside 50 after gathering nicely. Petrie does well to get a hand on the footy and knocks it in front of Lindsay Thomas. Under pressure from Henderson, he kicks from deep in the pocket on the 50 metre line. It’s an ugly kick, but amazingly lands in the square and dribbles through for a miracle goal. Thomas’ celebration is fitting.
5. Petrie’s seven goals
It was five years ago that Petrie last kicked seven, but it was to be his night on a fantastic evening for the club. He booted four goals in the first term on his way to a memorable performance. An effort made all-the-more impressive when you consider he was handed the red vest at the final change.
