Star midfielder Ash Riddell broke the AFLW disposals record as the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos tuned up for the AFLW finals with a confidence-boosting 39-point win over West Coast at Arden St.

Needing to win big to maximise their chance of earning a home qualifying final, the Roos kicked their highest score of the season against the Eagles, winning 9.5 (59) to 3.2 (20).

The Kangaroos will host a qualifying final in Melbourne next weekend if sixth-placed Fremantle don't overtake them on percentage. The Dockers host Gold Coast on Sunday.

But regardless of Sunday's outcome, Darren Crocker's side can take heart from a revitalised performance following two losses to finals-bound opponents in the past fortnight.

North Melbourne produced a strong team display in its timely return to form but it was star midfielder Riddell who shone brightest.

The prolific ball-winner gathered 42 disposals to surpass the previous best mark of 35, which she held jointly with Adelaide pair Ebony Marinoff and Anne Hatchard.

Bottom side West Coast stunned its hosts with a hot start, and when Grace Kelly burst into space to give the Eagles two of the first three goals, a boilover looked on the cards.

But it was all North Melbourne from there as Emma King announced her return from an ankle injury with two strong marks that both led to goals in the opening term.

Riddell had 22 disposals in the first half as five consecutive goals gave the Kangaroos a commanding 28-point lead at the main break.

They went on with the job in the third term before cruising to a comfortable win.

Ruck-forward King was one of four multiple goalkickers for the Kangaroos, with Daria Bannister, Jasmine Garner and Tahlia Randall kicking two majors each.

Emma Kearney (25 disposals), Jenna Bruton (27) and Garner (26) won plenty of the ball, while Emma Swanson (26) was the visitors' best.

The result completed a bleak season for West Coast, which took out the wooden spoon with a 1-9 record.

The Eagles' last three defeats of a trying campaign - which was impacted by interstate travel restrictions - were by a combined margin of 173 points.

From her 10-touch first term, there was a sense that the prolific Ash Riddell had the AFLW disposals record in her sights. The 42 possessions she gathered by the final siren capped a superb home-and-away season, in which she has firmly established herself as one of the competition's biggest stars. 

Return of the King

The Kangaroos badly missed ruck Emma King's aerial presence in last week's defeat by Brisbane, and she wasted no time asserting herself on her return. She was a towering threat at the top of the goal square, calming the Kangaroos' early nerves with two first-quarter goals from two big marks. Hopefully for the side's finals ambitions, she's been saving her best form for last this season.

What's next?

Fremantle's result against Gold Coast on Sunday will determine the Kangaroos' opponent in their knockout qualifying final, and where the game will be played. If the Dockers win, they'll meet the Roos in finals week one and percentage will decide which team plays at home. Should the Suns spring an upset, the Roos will host a rematch of last year's qualifying final against fierce rivals Collingwood.
