The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos will proudly wear the club’s Indigenous guernsey in this Sunday’s clash with Collingwood at North Hobart Oval.

The guernsey was originally designed by Indigenous artist, Emma Macneill, in collaboration with Kaitlyn Ashmore, Mia King and Jy Simpkin.

The Kangaroos originally wore the design in 2021, in a predominantly white colourway.

Rising star and proud Jaowyn woman Mia King explains the meaning behind the guernsey design.

"We have the kangaroo paw in the middle. It comes in all different shapes and sizes to represent the women at the football club coming from all different cultures and backgrounds and coming together as one," King said.

"The boomerangs on the side represent the men, helping to empower us and the hands across the front, the shield of protection."

Among the matchday events as the club celebrates Indigenous culture at North Hobart Oval this Sunday will be:

  • An Aboriginal elder from Lutruwita in Tasmania will perform a Welcome to Country pre-game
  • Tasmanian Aboriginal youth groups will form a guard on honour as the team enters the stadium
  • A traditional dance will be performed on-ground at quarter time.

This year’s AFLW Indigenous guernsey is available online or in-store at the Roo Shop, including at the Roo Shop outlet in Hobart on Sunday. Members receive a 10 per cent discount.
