VFL R7 team: Eight changes after the bye

North Melbourne has made eight changes to its VFL side that lost to the Suns in Round 5.

Will Phillips and Aaron Hall have been brought back into the team, while recruit Daniel Howe has also been named after a stretch of games in the senior side from Rounds 2-7.

The VFL-listed quartet of Nick Stevens, Jack Ellwood, Ben Bath and Nick Hodgson have earned recalls with Bath to serve as the 23rd player.

    02:39

Moving into the AFL this week is Jack Mahony, Miller Bergman, Flynn Perez and senior debutant Blake Drury.

Despite dealing with a knee issue through the week, George Wardlaw has retained his spot in midfield after getting the green light during Thursday's main training session.

Ruck-forward Callum Coleman-Jones, who kicked two goals against Gold Coast a fortnight ago and made his AFL season debut last week, will miss due to concussion.

The young defensive duo of Josh Goater (hamstring) and Jackson Archer (groin) also make way.

    02:35

Tarryn Thomas will play his first game for the season as he continues to work through his VFL block.

A return to the AFL program will be dependent on Thomas' ongoing improvement in standards of attitude and behaviour.

AFL-listed players named in the side include Kallan Dawson, Hugh Greenwood, Phoenix Spicer, Hamish Free, Jacob Edwards, Eddie Ford, Aiden Bonar, Lachie Young, Howe, Phillips, Thomas, Wardlaw and Hall.

VFL R7 match report: Youngsters shine in tricky conditions

The Roos had a host of young guns impress in their dominant 66-point win over Sandringham in the VFL on Sunday afternoon

In wintry conditions at Arden Street Oval, Cooper Harvey and Eddie Ford combined for seven goals to help propel North Melbourne's VFL side to a 14.16 (100) to 4.10 (34) well-rounded win over Sandringham.

In contrasting fashion to how it started against the Suns a fortnight ago, North Melbourne gained the ascendancy right from the first bounce and dominated the key statistical metrics en route to its 66-point triumph.

Claiming their third win of the campaign and second in the past three rounds, a five-goal-to-one final term capped off a dominant performance that saw notable outings from a host of Kangaroos.

    11:02

"It was a really pleasing win today," VFL coach Tom Lynch told NMFC Media.

"Our ability to work hard and outnumber around the contests was really important in getting the result we did and full credit goes to the players that were out there."

The Roos tallied 106 more disposals and 18 more inside 50s than Sandringham, but also, impressively out-tackled their opponents 64-48 despite being largely in control of possession.

Hugh Greenwood led the way on the defensive end with a game-high 10 tackles, while the VFL-listed Nick Hodgson made his presence felt with seven in the fluctuating weather conditions.

    01:50

All afternoon the forward line quartet of Harvey (four goals, 17 disposals), Ford (three goals, 23 disposals), Phoenix Spicer (14 disposals, four clearances, one goal) and Sam Lowson (three goals, eight marks) proved tough to contain from a Sandringham perspective.

Not only did they get dangerous on the burst heading inside 50, but the pressure applied by the contingent helped create plenty of other scoring opportunities.

"It was great to see some of our young players play the way they did, in particular those half-forwards because they often play a really selfless role for us in terms of getting up (the ground) and providing outlets but also closing the opposition down on the way out," Lynch said.

"And sometimes you don't get much reward but Cooper got that reward today, 'Fordy' had a really strong game, Spicer's pressure was important and he was really clean for us.

"They were supported by a couple of other young guys in Hodgson and Jack Ellwood who provided great forward pressure for us as well."

Will Phillips and Dan Howe played crucial roles in the midfield, collecting 25 and 23 touches respectively, while Aaron Hall provided run off half-back on his way to 33 disposals.

Young draftee George Wardlaw (knee) was a late out for the Kangaroos and was replaced in the side by Bode Stevens, while defender Aiden Bonar left the field prematurely due to a quad issue.

"George was really close to getting up," Lynch mentioned.

"We just thought it was best that we get him right for next week and I've got no doubt he will be off a really strong week at training.

"Aiden's injury is minor at the moment ... but we'll know more in the coming days."
