North Melbourne is a team that’s rapidly finding form at the moment, with victory over Carlton and a competitive showing against Geelong reason for positivity in recent weeks.
After North’s VFL side registered its fourth win in five games on Saturday, there are a number of players pushing for selection against Richmond this weekend.
North Media looks at who is in the mix.
After missing last week’s clash with Geelong due to a shoulder injury, Cam Zurhaar looks set to return to North’s forward line, with David Noble saying post-game the plan is for his inclusion this weekend.
The forward has been in fine form in the second half of 2021, and currently sits second in North’s goal kicking tally with 24 from 17 games.
Tarryn Thomas entered the 12-day concussion protocols after suffering delayed symptoms after the Carlton clash.
The breakout midfielder should be in line for a return, should he pass all required tests in the lead-up to Saturday’s game at the MCG.
Since he set tongues wagging with four goals in his return half of football a few weeks ago, Charlie Comben has been putting together a strong run of form at reserve level as he looks to find fitness after a long injury layoff.
Comben took four contested marks against Port Melbourne on the weekend, kicking 2 goals and 3 behinds in a dominant forward display.
While North will be taking no risks with the big number-30, his VFL form means he’s starting to bang the door down for an AFL debut.
Often playing as an inside-midfielder in the VFL, Charlie Lazzaro has quickly become a force to be reckoned with at reserve level, with the first-year player putting in yet another impressive display on Saturday.
Finishing with 24 disposals, 5 tackles and a goal, Lazzaro was everywhere against Port Melbourne, with his fast and accurate handballing crucial in his side’s victory.
Aiden Bonar performed admirably against the Borough, spending the second half of the clash in an unfamiliar centre half back role due to injury to VFL-listed Mark Baker, however he thrived in what was a tough contest.
Bonar collected 19 disposals, 6 marks and 5 tackles for the day, with his run and carry out of the back line in the first half an asset in the unpredictable and windy conditions.
Patrick Walker has been named as an AFL emergency in recent weeks and did his chances of a debut no harm, with yet another strong performance on the wing at VFL level.
Finishing with 20 disposals and 8 marks, Walker’s engine and kicking ability not only allowed him to set up many of North’s forays inside 50, but track back and help an undermanned defence in the second half.
Lachie Young spent much of his time on the wing in the VFL, and attacked each contest with the grit and ferocity one would expect of an AFL player fighting for his spot.
Stats of 19 disposals and 4 tackles don’t tell the full story of Young’s game, with his defensive pressure throughout the day key to the win.
After being named as an emergency for the clash with Geelong, Phoenix Spicer looks to have fully shaken off the hamstring injury that plagued him for much of the 2021 season.
An excitement and pace machine, Spicer finished the game with 13 disposals, but his run, carry and desire to take the game on provided a consistent and dangerous threat to the away side.
