Sam Gibson has reclaimed his mantle as North’s best runner, storming home to win Monday’s time trial at Arden Street.
Despite falling behind in the early stages after a long lay-off due to ankle surgery, Gibson took the lead from teammate Will Fordham in the final stages.
“I’ve had a pretty interrupted pre-season, so to come back and run an OK time was pretty pleasing,” he told NMFC.com.au.
“I must admit, (with) probably a lap to go I thought I was no chance. Funny things happen in these races … you are pretty tired, some blokes blow up, so I just tried to run the quickest time I could.”
The 29-year-old is stepping up his training regime, back with the main group after a delayed start to his pre-season campaign.
“I’ll join in most of today. I’m pretty much back into it now, just being a bit over-precautionary.”
Gibson beat home Fordham, Mason Wood and Mitch Hibberd to claim ultimate bragging rights.
“He’s (Gibson) a good runner, he’s a ridiculously good runner,” Fordham said.
“I slowly heard him coming, his breathing, and then I hit a bit of a wall.
“I beat my time by three or four seconds I think. I’m just shattered I couldn’t get him.”
The Roos are boasting close to a full contingent on the track in recent weeks, putting them in a great position for next month’s NAB Challenge campaign.
