Majak Daw is eager to continue his development as a footballer, and a move further up the field could be the perfect stepping stone towards an AFL debut.

Promoted to the club’s senior list at the end of last season, the 21 year-old says lining up in attack during pre-season training has been a valuable learning experience.

“I’m really excited about the change of role this year with playing a bit more up forward,” Daw told NMFC.com.au.

“It’s been pretty exciting having guys like Drewy (Petrie) and just learning off them (the forwards). They are really professional about how they go about things, and every training session I’m learning off those guys, and learning something new.”

Daw has spent the majority of his time in the VFL as a ruckman, but his strong athleticism and leap could make him a dangerous option in front of goals.

But the league’s first Sudanese-born player is the first to admit the transition has been a challenge.

“A big focus of ours is defending. Team defence starts up forward, so I’m just getting my head around that now,” he added.

“We’ve got good defenders up there like Scott Thompson and Nathan Grima, those guys don’t give you an inch, they are such good players. You learn off them as well, and they are really competitive sort of people.”

Tuesday night's intraclub match in Ballarat will be Daw's first chance to impress in 2013, and he hopes to make his mark.

“I’m trying to give myself every opportunity to be able to play in the NAB Cup.

“I’ll try and do everything right in the intraclub match, and if I do everything in my control to the best of my ability, then the rest will take care of itself.”
