The vivaciously talented Tarryn Thomas has performed well in a number of on-field roles for North Melbourne since his selection in the 2018 NAB AFL Draft.

Whether it be forward, wing, inside midfield or outside midfield, Thomas possesses the x-factor and silky talent to turn any game on its head whenever the ball is in his hands.

This season, while still spending time forward and outside, he’s slowly transitioning into a bona-fide inside midfield option, as he improves his output week after week.

His performance against Essendon was no different, impressing with not just his speed and efficiency, but also his ability to get the ball out of the contest.

Speaking to North Media, Thomas said his newfound midfield time has given him a new expectation on his own game.

“I’m really enjoying having more time in there … I feel like being in the midfield really helps me get in the game, and it makes me feel better and more involved,” he told North Media.

“Starting inside helps me and my footy … [rather than] going forward and then coming into the midfield … I’m loving it at the moment.

Across the season so far Thomas is setting career high averages in disposals (15.5), clearances (2), contested possessions (6.4) and score involvements (4.7), indicating across the board improvement from the young gun.

He played one of the most complete games of his young career against the Bombers, setting  career-highs in disposals (21), clearances (5) and effective disposals (19) while still sneaking forward to kick 2 goals.

Running at an impressive 90.5 per cent disposal efficiency and registering 4 score involvements, David Noble says the more time Thomas spends in midfield, the better he’ll become.

“I thought Tarryn continued in a really good vein of form [today] with 5 clearances in the midfield,” Noble said.

“It seems the more we’ve been able to get him in there, the relationship he builds with ‘Cunners’ and Jy (Simpkin) I think is really good.”

Thomas agrees with the sentiment that the on-field chemistry with his fellow midfielders is improving. He says working more closely with such quality players is helping him raise his own game.

“Having heaps more midfield time around 'Cunners' and all those boys … the midfield group have really taken me under their wings,” Thomas said.

“Playing in the midfield around Goldy is good … [and] especially Jy is helping me find my way in there.”
