NORTH Melbourne forward Corey Jones admitted he had some doubts deep in the fourth quarter of Saturday night's stirring eight-point win over the Brisbane Lions.
Jones said it “didn't look good” with five minutes to go as Brisbane had a nine-point lead against the Kangaroos who had been kept goalless to that point.
But a crucial set-shot goal from 50m by Lachlan Hansen, and a courageous mark and conversion by Scott McMahon gave the Kangaroos a timely win.
“It was too-ing and fro-ing all night,” Jones said.
“It looked in a bit of doubt but we managed to have the legs at the end and kick those crucial goals.
“It was a big game for both clubs so to come out with the points in such a close contest was fantastic.”
Jones was used in a number of roles on Saturday night, including his customary forward post, but with little influence there he was even moved on-ball at one stage.
The 27-year-old said despite the significance of the win, North Melbourne was looking no further than Sunday's showdown with the Bulldogs at the Telstra Dome.
“We're one of only three teams to beat them this year so it should be a good contest,” he said.
“We're now six points in front of Brisbane and if we keep winning, we're clear of the log-jam, but if we lose a game or two we're very quickly back in the ruck.
“We're definitely not even looking at the top four yet, because if you drop a game you might be out of the finals race before you know it.”
Jones said he and his Kangaroo teammates had enjoyed their stint on the Gold Coast, which came to an end on a winning note at Carrara.
He said the support over the past couple of seasons on their trips north had been terrific, and with the number of ex-pats on the Coast, expected any AFL venture there to be a success.
