Brad Scott will look to calm his players’ emotions leading into Sunday’s clash against Adelaide, with the North Melbourne coach wary of ‘overthinking’ the first game of the year.

Speaking on Fox Footy’s Round Table, Scott said it’s important to get off to a good start, but will remind his players that round one has the same significance as any other game.

“I think you can overthink it,” he said of the players and coaches’ preparation.

“The reality is there’s four points on offer. There’s also four points on offer in round two.”

Scott compared the build-up to a season-opener to that of make-or-break games in September.

“It’s a little bit like going into finals I think. It’s the team that stays the most composed that generally comes out on top,” he said.

While North hasn’t won a round one game since 2009, it is in arguably a better position than the previous five seasons with almost a full list to choose from.

Scott said he’s confident his players won’t be overwhelmed by the occasion, despite playing in front of a huge crowd at Adelaide Oval.

“Even the players really build themselves up for round one and there are players who are regulars in the team who are looking forward to it.

“There are those who are fighting for a spot in the team. Round one always seems to hold more significance for the players who are trying to emerge.

“In reality, you’ve got to as a coach try and calm your players down (for) round one.”

After two wins from three games in the pre-season, North is ready and raring to go.

“There’s always that excitement. It’s hard to replicate the pressure in the pre-season.

“The NAB Challenge this year I thought was a great format. We had three games well-spaced, where we could get a lot of game-time into our players, so we enter round one as well prepared as we could be.”
