North Melbourne AFL and AFLW players Aidan Corr and Daisy Bateman joined the Salvation Army Support in Public Housing Program for a sunny day barbecue at Gardiner Reserve.
The Salvation Army Support in Public Housing Program assists the residents of five housing blocks in North Melbourne, an area which was affected by the hard lockdown in mid-2020. The program hosts recreational activities to help engage the community and avoid isolation, particularly after COVID lockdown.
The afternoon was spent having a kick of the footy, eating some sausages in bread and engaging in great conversation.
“It's super important to get out to local community groups to show our support as a club, as well as individuals. We both individually feel very passionate about supporting communities, and collectively as a club we like to get amongst it as well.” Bateman told North Media.
Corr and Bateman chatted with several people of varying backgrounds and ages, including 82-year old resident Joan. Joan has lived in North Melbourne her whole life and has been a member of the football club for 55 years.
“Joan was saying they love to have the North game on TV every weekend when it’s an away game,” Corr explained.
“Six of them come together with their drinks and nibbles and they really make the most of it. It's just important to keep that connection, have someone to chat to and have something to look forward to.”
