Former early draftee Jack Scrimshaw has been traded to Hawthorn.

The Hawks gave up a future third-round selection for the tall backman and a future fourth-round selection..

Scrimshaw, who was recruited at No.7 in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft, has played only four games in his career, with none coming this year. 

He had been contracted until the end of 2020 and was set to earn $400,000 in each of the final two years of his deal. 

At 193cm, Scrimshaw offers height and is a beautiful left-foot kick. 

However, the Victorian struggled to find his feet in Queensland, as he told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Monday. 

"I just had a few battles happening off-field and they've sort of affected my performance a little bit," Scrimshaw said. 

"I just felt like if I was around my family and friends, it would make it a little bit easier.

"When I was 18, moving interstate, it was pretty hard, so I had a few things to deal with. That was probably the main thing."

A Hawthorn supporter growing up, the 20-year-old has met with legendary coach Alastair Clarkson.

The Hawks are also in line to land Tom Scully from Greater Western Sydney and Chad Wingard from Port Adelaide.

"We've had mature conversations with Jack and his management in recent times and agreed that we would trade Jack should we find a suitable trade," Suns list manager Craig Cameron told goldcoastfc.com.au.

"As a club we wish Jack all the best for the future and thank him for his effort over the past two seasons."

Hawthorn football manager Graham Wright was excited about what Scrimshaw could bring.

"Jack is a very talented player and our coaches look forward to working with Jack to maximise his full potential back in Melbourne," Wright told hawthornfc.com.au.
