North Melbourne champion David King says the Roos are an “easy whack at the moment” and has hit back at the club’s critics.
The dual premiership player added some perspective to North's early season woes, saying the club is on a journey of discovery and development.
“They’re an easy whack at the moment the Kangaroos - they’re 200 minutes into a full rebuild. It doesn’t get as far away from the pemiership than what they are right now,” he said on Fox Footy’s AFL360 program.
“Everyone’s saying ‘are they going to be competitive on Friday night?’ - they may not be, I’ve got no idea. Maybe they have 40 good minutes, they won’t have 120 good minutes and beat the Dogs I don’t think, but it’d be a great story if they did.”
King’s take comes after triple premiership Lion Jonathan Brown suggested North should lose the annual Good Friday game, should it be beaten by the fifth-placed Dogs.
“Jonno Brown says you’ve got to earn the right. I’m not sure you do. Round 1 for a decade we had Richmond, really poor for a decade and then Carlton have been poor for the next five or six years, to start the season and we haven’t changed that,” King said.
“I mean, we haven’t always had great Queen’s Birthday games. We might not get a great game on Friday, but we just might, who knows.
“I just think if we’re going to put the acid on teams for one performance, will do to your own team as well Browny. I mean, Brisbane got smacked in 2019 in the Easter Thursday clash given the keys to the city on that one and got beat by 10 goals and Browny went hard on the Monday,” he said.
“So if you wield the axe once, keep swinging it.
“But I just think it’s unfair. Give those clubs a chance to make some money. We just need to temper things towards the Kangaroos a bit.”
