All-Australian defender Scott Thompson is claiming to be a 'natural salesman' after signing up 33 members on Monday night - the most of any player at the club's annual telethon.

Almost 400 supporters became members in just two hours with half the squad hitting the phones at the BMS Call Centre in Richmond.

β€œNaturally, all the boys are very competitive, so even at the telethon we like to make it a challenge to see who can get the most people signed up,” Thompson told NMFC.com.au.

β€œJack Ziebell and Sam Wright used their social media to get people to tweet their phone numbers in, which was definitely cheating in my opinion but it still didn’t get them over the line.

"In all seriousness, it's a really good opportunity to speak to our members personally because I know they really appreciate it.”

North is already more than 4,300 members ahead of the same time last year and is steadily tracking to reach the target of 40,000.

Syd Barker medallist Thompson, believes record membership is achievable.

β€œOur members are extremely important to us. When people sign up its not only good for the club but for the players it makes us love running out on the ground even more when it’s in front of a big crowd,” Thompson said.

β€œWhen our members are really vocal at a game it creates an incredible atmosphere and makes the team lift because we know that everyone is behind us. Obviously we need to perform well and play great footy, but when we have our supporters cheering us on, it encourages us to strive to be even better.”

North Melbourne’s round one clash against Essendon is fast approaching and Thompson is encouraging everyone to jump on board before the season begins.

β€œIt would be great to have as many people signed up as members before the season kicks off.”
