At North Melbourne’s A Celebration of Shinboner Spirit mid-season event, the club will announce the Shinboner of the Era for 2005-2015.
Earlier this year, a Shinboner of the Era selection committee was formed, with key officials nominating five North Melbourne players who they believed best typified what it meant to be a Shinboner.
Over the next five weeks, each candidate will be revealed one-by-one. Once the five names have been made public, North Melbourne members will then have their chance to select who they believe is the Shinboner of the Era.
The fourth player on the list is Brent Harvey.
Over the course of his 421-game career (and counting), just about every superlative in the book has been used to describe Harvey.
Closing in on the all-time AFL games record, Harvey’s 21 years at Arden Street have brought countless match-winning performances.
Harvey made his debut as Shinboner #853 – with Corey Wagner becoming number 992 this week it means the 38-year-old has played with almost 140 teammates, a monstrous number.
One of Harvey’s best traits has been his consistency – since 1998 he’s played less than 20 games in a season on just two occasions; once due to injury (2009) and the other because of suspension (2013) – never because of poor form.
His best Brownlow performance was 22 votes in 2007 to finish second. It was highlighted by a brilliant streak mid-season, polling three votes in five consecutive matches.
Harvey has polled Brownlow votes in a remarkable 18 straight seasons, and is odds on to make it 19 considering some of his games already in 2016.
Only six goals behind John Longmire for second all-time at North Melbourne, Harvey is remarkably on track to set a personal best for goals in a season. With 23 already in 12 games, at current pace he’ll comfortably pass his previous high of 36, set in 2007.
