It was a disappointing first-up loss, but Jy Simpkin says North Melbourne can still take plenty of positives from its first competitive hit-out.

The Roos showed promise in periods throughout the game, but an impressive Saints’ lineup ultimately proved too strong for the young group.

“We were very undisciplined at times and gave away six or seven goals from free kicks and 50-metre penalties,” Simpkin told the media.

“When we did move the ball through the corridor… there were some really good passages of play.

“I think the fans can be excited about that going forward.”

It was the supporters’ first look at draftees Tom Powell, Eddie Ford and Charlie Lazzaro, as well as new recruits Aidan Corr, Jaidyn Stephenson, Connor Menadue and Lachie Young.

With so many new faces and a new game-plan in place, Simpkin said patience was key.

“It was the first time all the boys have played together so it was a good gelling experience,” he said.

“Tom Powell’s first half was really good, Charlie Lazzaro was good at stages… Aidan Corr, Lachie Young and all these new boys put their hands up.

Despite the positive of so many new players getting match fitness into their legs, a number of seasoned stars were missing for North.

The return of that experience sure to further aid Jaidyn Stephenson, who had spells the midfield and attack in an impressive debut.

“We pretty much had our starting midfield out with Cunnington, Jed (Anderson), Goldy, Polec and Dumont,” Simpkin said.

“If we get a few of those boys back for round one it’s going to add a lot of experience.

“Once we get those hard bulls back like ‘Cunners’ and Jed, that can free him (Stephenson) up on the outside.”

Number three draft pick Will Phillips was also absent for the game, as were the likes of Jack Mahony, Aidan Bonar and Tristan Xerri among others.

The only way is up according to Simpkin, who believes North will improve on a week-to-week basis.

“It’s really exciting and we’re going to be a lot more attacking going forward,” he said.

“Each week we’re going to learn and grow.”
