NMFC.com.au caught up with recruiting manager Bryce Lewis following the draft to discuss the club's new additions.
Jy Simpkin - Pick 12
“Jy Simpkin’s a creative mid-forward who was struck down with a broken leg earlier in the year, but was a highly credentialed 17-year-old. He was bracketed in the top couple in his age group in his 17th year.
“He’s a very creative player who brings others into the game. He plays with a lot of energy, x-factor and unpredictability.
“He’s certainly a player who we think will complement our group, particularly in time with Brent (Harvey) and Daniel Wells leaving. He’s a guy that we think can give us a point of difference.”
Declan Watson - Pick 34
“Declan is a key-defender who has been at the Brisbane Lions Academy.
“He’s got a strong body and he’s highly competitive. He has great ability to play one-on-one, read the ball and intercept and get involved in some offensive ball movement.
“In terms of position (defence) it was a need, but at the same time we haven't jumped over players to reach for Declan. We rated him in that draft range and we were able to pick him up which is fantastic."
Josh Williams - Pick 36
“Josh was one of the quickest players in the draft. He’s an outside-mid who likes to run and carry and take the game on. He’s also been a goal-kicker.
“He’s a good size, about 188 or 189 (centimetres), but needs to put on a little bit of size which he’ll be able to do.
“He’s a player that with his speed and his run, we think has got really appealing attributes."
Nick Larkey- Pick 73
“Nick's been a bit of a swingman. He played as a defender for Vic Metro in the National Championships, but he’s equally capable up forward.
“He’s kicked some bags of goals, and he can also pinch-hit in the ruck.
“He’s 198 centimetres and needs to fill out a fair bit; we’re confident he’ll do that.
“Nick’s a guy who has shown an ability to impact games for Oakleigh, including finals during the course of this season.”
