North Melbourne has secured a trade with Geelong which will see Shaun Higgins depart Arden St in exchange for pick 30.

North list manager Glenn Luff said it was important to negotiate a deal that was right for both parties.

“We’ve been working hard to reach a deal that all parties were satisfied with and getting a good pick in while helping Shaun secure a longer term deal was a priority,” Luff said.

“It’s important for us to secure a strong draft hand to invest in young talent but we also wanted to make sure we looked after someone who has been a champion player for our club.”

Luff thanked Higgins for his contribution.

“Shaun has been a really important player and person for our club and has won two Syd Barker medals,” he said.

“He’s been a great leader, is always professional and is one of the best role models you could ask for. He has helped develop our younger players and his experience and knowledge will hold them in good stead, so we thank him for that.

“We wish Shaun, Heidi and Rosie the very best for the next chapter in their lives.”

Higgins signed with North in 2014 as a restricted free agent and played 108 games for the Kangaroos.

He won back-to-back club best and fairest awards in 2017 and 2018, and was selected in the All-Australian team in 2018.
