Alan Yao moved to Australia from China when he was just 14-years old. Four years later, he found The Huddle in his search for extra assistance with his EAL (English as an Additional Language) studies.

In 2013, Alan began attending The Huddle’s study support program for two hours a week and has been thrilled with the help he has received already.

“Study Support is a great place for students to get help from tutors. My experience in study support is great and I always think it is my luck to be able to work with Maysie (Chen - his tutor),” he said.

“Maysie has not only helped me to improve my English but also enabled me to look at things from a different perspective. I really do appreciate the time she spent every week, it has helped me a lot.”

The Huddle’s study support coordinator Claire Henry paired Yao with Chen, knowing she would be most suited to his learning style and needs. It’s proven the perfect pairing.

“Maysie has all the qualities of a great volunteer tutor; friendly, intelligent, reliable, enthusiastic, patient, and passionate about education, particularly the English language,” Henry explained.

“Like Alan, Maysie has a great work ethic. She is successful in achieving her professional goals, making her a great role model for the students striving to achieve their study goals. She was keen to give back to the community through volunteering and sharing her passion for reading and writing.

“They seemed like a great match, so we arranged a regular time in which Maysie would tutor Alan on a weekly basis.”

One of the most successful programs run by The Huddle, Study Support gives access to high-quality tutoring for a variety of students who might not otherwise have had their opportunity, due to personal circumstances.

It’s not only the students who are grateful for the time they get to spend with their tutors, the teachers themselves are learning valuable lessons.

“‘From Alan, I've learnt a little bit more about the different methods that the education system in China uses.  Culturally, it's been an interesting and rewarding journey for me, as I was born in Australia and the style of learning is quite different,” Chen said.
