Every week, we'll be heading into the archive to recap some of the great games throughout North Melbourne's rich history.

North Melbourne entered its Qualifying Final against Port Adelaide having won 16 of its last 18 matches.

The two sides had played out a thrilling game earlier that year, with the Kangaroos getting over the line by 7 points, courtesy of 6 goals to Kent Kingsley on debut.

On what was a wet Saturday at the MCG, the Roos got off to a flying start, leading by 26 points at the first change, including two goals from 21-year-old Brent Harvey.

Port fought back, bringing the margin to within 12 points in the third term, with Stuart Dew proving a threat all day for the Power, finishing with four majors.

With the game in the balance - enter Wayne Carey.

The Roos’ captain stamped his authority on the contest with a third quarter blitz, booting three consecutive goals to stretch the lead to 32 at the final change.

Anthony Stevens (34 disposals, 1 goal) and Peter Bell (27 disposals, 1 goal) were outstanding in the midfield as the Roos ran out 44-point winners.

Carey finished with 6 goals, 11 marks and 24 disposals despite the tough conditions.

North would go on to taste premiership glory three weeks later when it defeated Carlton in the 1999 Grand Final.
