Brent Harvey: Hope still alive
Brent Harvey says he can’t help but dream about the Kangaroos playing finals football.
A few pieces of the puzzle would need to come together before the chance becomes a reality, but the 35-year old is holding some hope.
“You put your head down on the pillow at night and you’re excited. You’re excited to come to training again because it’s all up in the air, you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Harvey told 1116 SEN’s Morning Glory on Tuesday.
“You can’t help but think...unfortunately it didn’t look like we were going to make the finals and now...we still have to wait for a lot of results to go our way, but there’s still a small chance and going into the last round of the season, you’re still alive.”
Harvey believes if they’re lucky enough to get the opportunity, the Kangaroos can match it against the competition’s best.
“We’ll know going into the Collingwood game on Sunday, if the other two results go our way, that if we win, we play finals football,” Harvey said.
“I think we fancy ourselves against anyone now, you look at the weekend’s game against Hawthorn and them only just beating us. We had a few players out with Leigh Adams, Andrew Swallow and Scotty Thompson.
“We’ve pretty much challenged every other team except for Fremantle. It has been a funny season but in saying that, I’m really excited.”
Harvey pinpointed the moment the Roos let Hawthorn back into the game on Saturday and said it’s a crucial area which needs improvement.
“Hawthorn, in the third quarter, there were six or seven minutes where they kicked four or five goals and it just turned the game,” Harvey said.
“We went away in a short lapse of time and it kills you, because in today’s football, you can kick five goals in five minutes and that’s pretty much been the story for us so far this year.”
North’s string of agonisingly close losses in 2013 has been incredibly frustrating, but Harvey says they have complete clarity as a playing group.
“A lot of people from outside will point their finger and say it’s leadership, we’re not fit enough, we’re not big enough and all these types of things and we understand that, we can take that.
“Internally we know exactly why, when we come in on the Monday morning and Brad shows us our review, and we go away from what we do from the North Melbourne style of football, that seems to kill us.
“Without pointing the finger and saying one specific thing, we do look at the review and we think, ‘yep, we let ourselves down there’.”
