Brady Rawlings has projected an exciting period ahead for North Melbourne in the coming years, as the club builds on its emerging list.
At three wins and six losses, it’s been a challenging season so far, but Rawlings said a mix of exciting youth, and access to some elite talent would hold the Roos in good stead.
“We need to make sure we provide the coaches with a list that’s capable of going all the way, and that’s what we’ll be striving to do over the next few years,” he said on ABC Grandstand.
“Clearly with the trade we did last year (with Melbourne), we’ve got two first round picks going into this year’s draft, which is a pretty good position to be in, in terms of bringing in young talent.
“We’ve got a fair bit of young talent on the list we’ve really got to consider locking away as well.”
The next generation of stars were on show in the 69-point win over the Crows, with the likes of Cameron Zurhaar, Jy Simpkin and Luke Davies-Uniacke among North’s best.
With Tarryn Thomas, Bailey Scott, Nick Larkey already proving themselves at AFL level, as NAB Rising Star nominees, the Roos boast some of the league’s best youngsters.
“We think we’ve got a fair bit that can come in over the next year or two with some draft picks, hopefully we can attract a player or two from elsewhere and we want to retain our players we can see are part of our future,” Rawlings said.
The state of the club’s list will be a key focus, as North looks to win its fifth premiership, under coach Rhyce Shaw.
“There’s a lot of players at our club that are out of contract, so it’s a big couple of months for us to get things right,” Rawlings admitted.
“We want to win as many games as we can for the rest of this year … we’re clearly not in good form and we want to turn that around.
“But we also need to make sure we’re tracking forward in the future; everyone’s after a premiership, and we’re no different.”
