Draft preview: club by club
For a few months, North has been strongly linked to Sudanese-born big man Majak Daw. The 194cm tall can play key position or ruck.
Pre-season selections: Nil
Rookie selections: 4 (17, 33, 46, 58)
Locked in: Aidan Riley - NSW scholarship
Needs: With Andy Otten now sidelined for the 2010 season, the Crows may look for a similar type of defender/midfielder. Otherwise the list is solid, so expect the club to draft for best available talent.
In their sights: The Crows have already committed to Riley, which means they have three live selections. Expect some South Australians to come into the equation, such as midfielder Alex Carey and defender Alex Stopp. The Crows have also been linked to Victorians Tom McKenzie and Andrew Hooper. If Gold Coast overlooks former Pie and Box Hill midfielder Sam Iles, expect Adelaide to hone in.
BRISBANE LIONS
Pre-season selections: Nil
Rookie selections: 8 (16, 32, 45, 57, 67)
Locked in: Niall McKeever - international, 74 (TBC - Qld pre-selection), 76 (TBC - Qld pre-selection), 78 (TBC - Qld pre-selection)
Needs: With Joel Macdonald set to join Melbourne and Tim Notting retired, the revamped Lions may target a mid-sized defender/forward. A tallish midfielder would also be a handy acquisition.
In their sights: Irishman McKeever has already been snapped up, joining another countryman, Pearce Hanley, at the Lions. The club also has the opportunity of selecting three local players before the rookie draft starts. Expect Queenslanders Todd Grayson, Claye Beams and Brock McCauley to come under serious consideration. Kieren King may also be redrafted after just one season on the senior list.
CARLTON
Pre-season selections: Nil
Rookie selections: 6 (15, 31, 44, 56, 66, 73)
Locked in: Zach Tuohy - international
Needs: Expect the Blues to nab at least one tall forward, after they traded Brendan Fevola to the Lions and opted for mid-sized players in the NAB AFL Draft. A taller midfielder around the 190cm mark would also be useful.
In their sights: Carlton has already claimed Irishman Tuohy, leaving five live selections. Former Crow Aaron Kite was training with the club, while key forward Matthew Panos could come into play, if available. Another South Australian - mature SANFL forward/defender Michael Coad - has also been linked with the Blues.
COLLINGWOOD
Pre-season selections: Nil
Rookie selections: 3 (18, 34, 47)
Locked in: Seamus McNamara - international
Needs: Collingwood's list is shaping up nicely, but Anthony Rocca's retirement calls for another tall in attack. That may have been addressed with the acquisition of 204cm tall Amercian McNamara, who will be groomed into a key forward/ruckman.
In their sights: The Pies have just two live picks after netting the big man from Wisconsin. The club has shown genuine interest in VFL star Michael Barlow and would strongly consider he and defender Joe Dare, if either was up for grabs. Others to have been linked with the Pies include Jack Weston, Mitchell Taylor, Jonathan Ceglar, Clinton Garlett and Andrew Strijk.
ESSENDON
Pre-season selections: 1 (7)
Rookie selections: 5 (14, 30, 43, 55, 65)
Needs: Essendon has developed a good mix of players across the board, although further midfield depth and another tall forward-cum-defender could help down back and offset the loss of retired club greats Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas in attack.
In their sights: The Dons have the last pick in the pre-season draft and it remains to be seen if they will opt for youth or a player with AFL experience. One player that could come into that mix is Northern Territorian Liam Patrick, the cousin of Demon Liam Jurrah. VFL duo Michael Barlow and Marcus Marigliani have trained with the club and could be in contention for either draft.
FREMANTLE
Pre-season selections: 1 (3)
Rookie selections: 2 (8, 24)
Needs: Another ruckman, with just Aaron Sandilands, Zach Clarke and the versatile Kepler Bradley on the list.
In their sights: Former Don Adam McPhee will return to his original AFL club in the pre-season draft. This leaves just two rookie picks for Freo, which may go local. East Fremantle's Kyle Hardingham has been training with the side and is a genuine contender. Ex-Roo Matt Riggio, former Pie Danny Stanley and young Sandgropers Josh Donaldson and Cameron Kickett are others in the mix.
GEELONG CATS
Pre-season selections: Nil
Rookie selections: 4 (21, 37, 50, 61)
Needs: Unsurprisingly, the premiers have an excellent list with few deficiencies. They may look for a tall defender/forward, having lost Tom Harley and with Cameron Mooney in the twilight of his career. More midfield depth will also be considered.
In their sights: The Cats are seriously considering drafting experienced VFL star James Podsiadly as a mature-age rookie. The former Collingwood rookie captained Geelong's VFL team with aplomb in 2009. Both ex-Swan Daniel O'Keefe and former Bulldog Guy O'Keefe - no relation - have been training with the side, while young Geelong Falcon Mitch Fisher is also likely to come under consideration.
GOLD COAST
Pre-season selections: Nil
Rookie selections: 5 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

In their sights: Former Crow Robert Shirley, ex-Roo Daniel Harris and 2005 premiership player Luke Ablett are strong chances. Queenslander Scott Harding is also right in the mix, as he could be snaffled elsewhere in these drafts. VFL stars Sam Iles and Michael Barlow are up there, with young defender Joseph Dare and the speedy Robbie Hicks also linked to the club.

In their sights: Hawthorn will have a second NSW scholarship holder on its 2010 rookie list with Johnston joining Will Sierakowski. This gives the Hawks two live picks. Expect them to look for ruck options with ex-Bulldog Wayde Skipper and former Tiger Dean Putt - both training with the club. The Hawks will also look to youth, with Queenslander Matt Fowler or Eastern's Josh Dyson two possibilities.
MELBOURNE
Pre-season selections: 1 (1)
Rookie selections: 2 (6, 22)
Needs: The Demons are set to redraft Michael Newton and John Meesen, addressing two areas - a key forward and ruckman respectively. Unless a rival club pounces beforehand, the pair have been promised they will be with Melbourne in 2010.
In their sights: The Dees have the first pick in the pre-season draft and are committed to selecting former Lion Joel Macdonald. The defender has been training with the club and is a good fit, given the retirements of Paul Wheatley and Matthew Whelan. The only other club that could make a play for Meesen is Hawthorn, but that remains an outside chance.
NORTH MELBOURNE
Pre-season selections: Nil
Rookie selections: 2 (9, 25)
Needs: Midfield depth, plus another key position/ruckman type to support Drew Petrie and David Hale.
In their sights: For a few months, North has been strongly linked to Sudanese-born big man Majak Daw. The 194cm tall can play key position or ruck. He is still very raw, but has improved enormously in 2009 and has outstanding potential. Swan Matthew Laidlaw has also trained with the club and could come into the mix. Key defender Luke Thompson is a youngster in the frame.
PORT ADELAIDE
Pre-season selections: 1 (6)

Locked in: Daniel Bass - three-year non-registered (at 72); Jordan Johns - NSW scholarship)
Needs: A ruckman with AFL experience, given that Matthew Lobbe and Jarrad Redden are yet to debut. Midfielders will also be looked at - potentially taller types from 185cm upwards.
In their sights: Ex-Blue Cameron Cloke has been closely aligned with the Power. Former Swan ruckman James Meiklejohn, who has impressed in the SANFL in recent seasons, is also a chance to be redrafted. Matthew Panos, Derick Wanganeen, Alex Carey and Mitch Taylor are youngsters in the mix.
RICHMOND
Pre-season selections: 1 (2)
Rookie selections: 6 (7, 23, 38, 51, 62, 70)
Locked in: Jamie O'Reilly - international
Needs: The Tigers are likely to target players across each position, although a focus could be on tall and mid-sized defender/forwards. Players with strong kicking skills will also be a focus.
In their sights: Youngsters Dylan Grimes and Robbie Hicks are believed to be serious contenders for the Tigers' second pick in the pre-season draft, and could also be claimed in the rookie draft. Eastern's Jayden Cass and Josh Free, the son of former Richmond skipper Tony, are also in the rookie mix. Expect big man Graham Polak to be redrafted as a rookie.
ST KILDA
Pre-season selections: Nil
Rookie selections: 5 (20, 36, 49, 60, 69)
Locked in: Tommy Walsh - international
Needs: The Saints could focus on some mid-sized forwards, while further midfield depth also wouldn't hurt
In their sights: St Kilda has already secured young Irishman Walsh, a 195cm key forward regarded as one of the best recent Irish prospects. This leaves four live picks in the rookie draft, with Luke Thompson, Daniel Scott-Collings, Johnny Raynor, Tom Hill and Sean Tighe some of the youngsters linked with the club.

Expect them to take Murray Bushranger Dylan McNeil, with Sydney Uni's Sam Crichton in the mix. Big man Henry Playfair is a chance to be redrafted as a mature-age rookie.
WEST COAST EAGLES
Pre-season selections: 1 (5)
Rookie selections: 4 (11, 27, 40, 53)
Needs: West Coast may look at a small defender or mid-sized forward, but if history is a guide will top up on midfielders. Another long-term ruck prospect is a possibility.
In their sights: It would not surprise if West Coast redrafted Jamie McNamara either in the pre-season or rookie draft. WESTERN BULLDOGS
Pre-season selections: Nil

Patrick Rose and Dane Rampe are right in the mix, as is former Blue Jake Edwards, whose father Allan played for the Dogs in 1984. Majak Daw is also training with the side, and is a chance if the Roos don't pounce earlier.
