WEST Coast coach John Worsfold won’t rush dropped forward Quinten Lynch back into the side, despite the Eagles’ wasteful performance against Port Adelaide on Saturday night.

West Coast dominated the Power for the entire third quarter and won the inside 50 count 60-37 for the match. But the home side couldn’t capitalise in attack and lost by three points.

Lynch, who was on track to equal Glen Jakovich’s consecutive games record against Port Adelaide, was dropped after the Eagles’ round one loss, while Mark LeCras couldn’t be considered with hamstring soreness.

Worsfold said poor delivery inside 50 was more detrimental to his side’s cause than a lacklustre forward line, and Lynch was not the immediate solution.

“Quinten’s got areas of his game he has to work on to become the player that we need,” Worsfold said after the loss, adding that he had no regrets leaving the 27-year-old out.

“He’s been aware of those things for a few years and still hasn’t addressed them.

“So he needs to show that he can fix those areas to become a good enough player to help us go forward and get to where we want to get to.”

Worsfold said the delivery inside 50 was unacceptable from his midfielders, with key targets Josh Kennedy and Mitch Brown finishing the game with five marks between them.

“If you kick it straight to [the opposition], everyone’s off-side and that really killed us tonight,” the coach said.

“Our skills over four quarters weren’t good enough.

“We’re aware of that. We know we’re going to keep working on it and there’s reasons for it.

“That’s not acceptable at AFL level. Some of the players kicking the ball in, it was just very, very poor.”

Worsfold praised the efforts of Brown and Kennedy, who still managed to finish with two and four goals respectively, and indicated his forward structure would remain the same against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium in round three.

“I think at this stage Brown will play forward, and Kennedy, and our rucks will go up forward at times. That’ll be our set-up,” he said.

“We’re building something to go forward and until Quinten’s earned his spot back in the side and works on those areas, we’ll stick with what we’ve got.”
