In a positive omen the day before North Melbourne takes on Fremantle, all four games played on August 25 since the club’s first premiership have resulted in the Kangaroos scoring more than 100-points.

The date also signaled the end of North's last era of sustained success, possibly the day before the current team books its first finals berth since 2008.

3 - Brent Harvey (NM), 2 - Drew Petrie (NM), 1 - Adam Bentick (CAR)

Rolling into the finals and in reach of the top four, North needed to win and win well to keep the double chance alive. After a scrappy first quarter the forward line kicked into gear with 21 goals in the final three terms.

A staggering 14 players got on the score sheet, with no-one kicking more than four (Edwards and Petrie). It was the fifth of six successive wins against the Blues with an average winning margin of approximately six goals.

Preliminary Final, 2000
Melbourne 6.5.41, 14.10.94, 18.14.122, 23.18.156

North Melbourne: Sholl 7, Carey 3, Archer 2, Bell 2, Abraham 1, King 1, McKernan 1

A year removed from winning its second premiership in three seasons, North made it through to the preliminary final with a tough win over Hawthorn. However it would meet its match in the eventual runners up, the Demons.

In his last game, Craig Sholl kicked seven goals to give the Kangaroos a sniff, but it wasn't enough as Melbourne simply overpowered North with its multi-pronged forward line.

It would be the last time North progressed this deep into September for another seven years.

Round 21, 1984

It's not often a team has one more scoring shot than the opposition, yet loses by nine goals. Yet on this day at the MCG, it's exactly what happened.

A 22-year old Donald McDonald led all North goal kickers with 4.3 but down the other end, there was no answer for Bernie Quinlan. His 11 goals were part of 105 for the season, winning the Coleman Medal by a staggering 28 goals.

North struggled in 1984, winning only five games and finishing above only St Kilda on the ladder.

Round 21, 1979
Hawthorn 3.7.25, 3.11.29, 4.13.37, 7.18.60
North Melbourne 2.6.18, 8.13.61, 15.19.109, 24.21.165

Goals
Hawthorn: Ablett 1, Eade 1, Goss 1, Hendrie 1, McCarthy 1, Turner 1, Wilton 1
North Melbourne: Blight 5, Boyse 3, Glendinning 3, Murphy 3, Bryant 2, Ebert 2, Jarrott 2, Crosswell 1, Dempsey 1, Greig 1, Schimmelbusch 1

At the tail-end of a decade which these clubs dominated, the Roos and Hawks met one last time at Princes Park. Hawthorn had slipped out of premiership contention while North finished the season in second place with five losses.

The disparity between the sides on the ladder was reflected on the field as North used six unanswered goals in the second quarter to pull away and record a convincing win. A 14-goal second half led to a 105-point win; bettered only by the 125-point victory in 1994.
