North Melbourne’s plan to play home-games at Ballarat’s Eureka Stadium remain alive with a potential arrangement between cricket and AFL officials on the table according to the Herald Sun’s Glenn McFarlane.

The boutique stadium could come as the result of a $70 million upgrade allowing it to seat between 7,000 and 10,000 spectators with standing room boosting its capacity even further.

The ground would host AFL matches and first-class cricket games if a deal was to be struck.

"There's no definite decision been made and it's only in the early stages, but there are discussions happening," a state government source told McFarlane.

The story comes as North Melbourne heads to Ballarat for its fourth consecutive Community Camp; a result of the clubs commitment to bring more AFL content and engagement to the region

"I can't comment on these plans. However, I can say the North Melbourne Football Club believes a regional engagement to this club is critical to our long-term strategies," North Melbourne chief executive Eugene Arocca said.

"We continue to be active in discussions on how this club can play three or four games in regional Victoria, and Ballarat remains very much on the radar."

Funding for the proposal would be shared between the Federal and Victorian governments, Ballarat City Council, the AFL and various cricket bodies.

"I'm not prepared to talk about specifics, but we are certainly interested in looking at a number of different concepts," Cricket Victoria chief executive Tony Dodemaide said.

"We are probably the biggest state, if not one of the top two, and we are the only one in Australia that doesn't have its own designated facility.

"Besides the MCG, we don't have a compliant ground in Victoria that we can readily snap our fingers and play a first-class game at."

The Kangaroos have carved out a close relationship with Ballarat and the western Victoria region.
