CARLTON list manager Steven Icke says an in principle deal to land Melbourne's Brock McLean at the Blues is not quite over the line.

Although Carlton has agreed to give the Demons pick No.11 in exchange for McLean, he said some details still needed to be finalised.

Despite believing it would be viewed among the industry as a win/win for Carlton and Melbourne, Icke said clubs needed to interview players, complete medical screenings and work out the argy-bargy of the deal.

"It's a pick we don't rate lightly and Brock is a quality player that's worthy of that pick, so that's why we've offered it up," Icke told afl.com.au.

"I'll speak to Melbourne and see whether there might be something else that they might want to give back our way. At this stage, what we've agreed on will make the deal happen.

"We've got things that we need to tidy up from our end with ticking off the medical screening and just confirming what his arrangements are going to be with his manager."

Icke said there has been some urgency from Melbourne to get the deal lodged, but he remains confident it will become official early next week.

"We're not going to sign off on that until such time as we've done all of our due diligence," he said.

"If that takes an extra little while, then we'd rather get it right and tick every box, before we get the paperwork lodged.

"If that can be done at midday on Monday, then so be it. If it can't, we'll wait until it gets done."

Icke is also hopeful Carlton can acquire a top 17 selection in the upcoming trade period.

"We're looking at ways of getting back into the first-round," he said.
