North Melbourne rookie Matthew Scott has capped off an outstanding first year with the club by winning VFL affiliate Werribee’s reserves best and fairest award.

Scott played the majority of the year in the seconds but also managed a few appearances in the senior side late in the year on the back of his ball winning ability and hard-nosed approach.

The 19 year-old was selected by the Kangaroos in the 2009 Rookie Draft and previously played with the Eastern Ranges.

Despite his light frame, Scott was impressive with his in and under work and displayed an ability to be a genuine contested ball player throughout the year. On a few occasions, his courageous attack on the ball worked against him - the youngster was knocked out twice during the season.

Improving his body work at stoppages will be a focus for Scott over the pre-season, but this latest award is evidence of his talent and potential. It also serves as evidence that North’s recruiters are also well and truly on the ball.
