In the mix
It’s selection time at Aegis Park with members and supporters eagerly awaiting the naming of North’s squad set to take on Greater Western Sydney.
As the players hit the track on Thursday before the 25 is submitted to the AFL, Brad Scott will have one final chance to narrow his options ahead of Sunday’s game at Blundstone Arena, Hobart.
While three players are set to be trimmed from the squad on Friday, just being considered will prove a confidence boost for those toiling away at VFL level.
With lingering doubt over the fitness of Robbie Tarrant, Scott may be seeking another key-position player to fill the void. Tarrant was moved back to defence in the third term after proving ineffectual in attack, so it will be interesting to see which way the coach goes.

(In alphabetical order)
Aaron Black
It was a tough day at the office for North Ballarat and it’ll make things tough for Black to push for a recall. However, he did kick two goals to go with 10 possessions and five tackles, so he’s still some sort of chance to push up. The club may also be looking to help with his development by playing him against much younger opposition
Cameron Delaney
A promising NAB Cup campaign has most thinking a debut is just around the corner for the younger Delaney. With 14 touches, seven marks and six spoils, he was one of the Roosters’ better defenders in defeat. North’s key defenders were solid last week against some dangerous forwards, so he may have to wait a little longer.
Luke Delaney
Named as an emergency for round one, Delaney looks one of the more realistic prospects for a call-up. He did all he could at North Ballarat under immense pressure, with an impressive eight marks and seven spoils.
Cruize Garlett
Garlett was on the cusp of selection last week and can win plenty of the ball. He has the ability to add another dimension to the midfield and while he’s still building his way back to full fitness, 23 possessions against Sandringham gives him reason to be considered.
Levi Greenwood
Struck down with a corked buttock in the VFL, Greenwood looks an unlikely starter. He only had five possessions in half a game in a day to forget for Werribee, so may be searching more game-time to turn his form around.
Nathan Grima
Grima didn’t get up for Werribee’s VFL match last round with his knee still not quite right, but his importance to the North side can’t be understated. He’s likely to spend a week in the reserves, but Scott will know he can count on the key-position defender if needed.
Lachlan Hansen
Diagnosed with hamstring tendonitis, the versatile number six is another more likely to gain valuable game time in the VFL. But like Grima, he can’t be completely overlooked for a recall.
Brad McKenzie
One of the more hyped-up North draftees in recent times, McKenzie could be in the mix against an inexperienced Giants’ side. He had 13 possessions for the Roosters and with Scott no doubt looking to ease him into AFL football, the chance to play against opponents of a similar body size make him a tempting option.
Ben McKinley
One of the few who could hold his head high in Werribee’s big loss, McKinley spent time all over the ground and showed versatility previously unseen. He hasn’t played since mid-2011, so may need consistent performances to be considered.
Cameron Pedersen
A revelation in 2011, Pedersen’s greatest strength is his ability to play in the ruck, up forward and in defence. It’s an asset that holds him in good stead should Scott feel he’s short in any of the key posts. Tarrant’s potential omission through injury will open the door.
Cameron Richardson
After an injury interrupted pre-season campaign, it’s likely Richardson will spend more time at VFL level to build up his confidence and fitness. Still, 23 possessions in his first senior game of the year at the Roosters was impressive and he’s one to watch in the coming weeks.
Will Sierakowski
The former Hawk was solid against Port Melbourne with 18 possessions and eight one-percenters. His ability to run to receive could prove a handy addition to North’s structure.
Ben Speight
Speight was one of the Kangaroos’ most reliable players in a substitute role in 2011, but having returned from shoulder surgery, he’s had a somewhat disappointing pre-season so far. His 18 possessions and six marks against the Borough didn’t make him a stand-out, but his ability to impact games late could see him in the mix for a call-up.
Ben Warren
The best of North’s VFL representatives last week, Warren kicked five goals and pulled down eight marks on an otherwise average day for the Tigers. He’ll run and present all day, and deserves an opportunity to further prove himself in the AFL.
