North Melbourne chief executive officer Eugene Arocca has renewed his club’s call to play AFL matches on Good Friday.

The Kangaroos were the first to lobby the AFL and have tried hard to secure a game on the day for several years but are yet to achieve a breakthrough.

“We understand Andrew Demetriou and the AFL’s position on Good Friday matches, but if ever they decide to change their stance, we would hope to be first cab off the rank given we were the club that proposed it all those years ago.”

Arocca hopes it’s only a matter of time before the AFL follows the trend set by other sports and leagues around the world.

“The NRL and other sports play on Good Friday so if the AFL ever changes its position, we would love to be involved in a Good Friday game. It’s also worth pointing out that in America, NBA is played on Christmas Day with great success,” he told kangaroos.com.au.

“With all due respect, we feel a lot of people would appreciate the option to watch some AFL on Good Friday and we can only go by the amazing turnout we get at training on the day.”

Over the past few years the club has held highly successful Good Friday practice sessions with thousands of fans turning out.

“This year we will again have an open training with our players available to supporters for photos and autographs afterwards. It’s been tremendously successful in the past and there’s a lot of good will in it.

“It’s a great day for families and kids to spend together at Aegis Park with the boys in full flight on the track. Our mascot will be there handing out Easter eggs and it’s a day our players really look forward to every year."
