NORTH Melbourne could soon have its full quota of midfielders available with Daniel Wells and draftee Ben Cunnington scheduled to play within four weeks.

Osteitis pubis has prevented Wells from appearing at any level since early August, however the 25-year-old trained strongly at Arden Street on Tuesday afternoon and looks in good condition.

Club doctor Con Mitropoulos said Wells, who played just seven AFL games in 2009, was nearing the final stages of his rehabilitation.

"[He's] doing extremely well with his groins and is on schedule for a game or two before round one," he said.

Cunnington, North's first-round selection in November's NAB AFL Draft, suffered a stress reaction in his right foot in early January but will join his teammates in full training next week.

Mitropoulos said North would stick to its conservative approach with the 18-year-old, whose recent program has included running and agility work.

"[He'll] be available throughout that NAB Cup series for him to play some practice games as well," he said.

"He's perhaps the most underdone at the minute, given we only picked him up late. So he's missed a sizeable amount of pre-season."

Forward Josh Smith has overcome a lingering groin complaint and is available for selection for Sunday's NAB Cup game against Geelong at Etihad Stadium.

Defender Michael Firrito (ankle) and onballer Leigh Adams (knee) have also rebounded well from their summer setbacks, while second-year player Nathan O'Keefe has been given a clean bill of health from glandular fever.

The threat of soft tissue injuries meant O'Keefe was kept out of last week's intra-club match in Ballarat.

That was also the case for rookie-listed utility Alan Obst, who is expected to start kicking next week after re-tearing the quad muscle in his right leg over Christmas.

Mitropoulos said recovery from Obst's injury could often stretch to three months.

"He's still a month away from doing anything of any great significance training-wise," he said.

"Unfortunately, quads like this have a tendency to recur."

Scans on Wednesday confirmed centre half-back Nathan Grima won't require surgery on his broken right little finger, but he will wear a splint for four weeks.
