Mick Malthouse believes the Kangaroos are well in the finals mix and would already be in the top eight if not for some unlucky decisions.

Speaking at his weekly media conference on Thursday, the Collingwood coach shared his admiration for North Melbourne and its brand.

"I think they're a terrific side. I look at that side and think, they're young and aggressive, with a fantastic game structure," Malthouse said.

"I admire the coach (Brad Scott) and I admire their club spirit - we're in for a fight."

North Melbourne has lost five games by under three goals this season, but Malthouse believes it's only a matter of time before things turn around.

"The win-loss ratio - I think they've been very, very stiff in a couple of decisions that may well have gone either way for them.

"I've had them in the eight before the season started and I still think they've got a wonderful chance to be in the eight."
