North Melbourne medium forward Ben Warren looks to have escaped relatively unharmed despite needing to be stretchered from the field playing for Werribee on Saturday.

Warren was the Tigers' most dangerous forward and took a strong mark outside the fifty metre arc near the boundary but fell awkwardly and was left writhing in pain.

Seen clutching his left ankle and unable to put any weight on the joint, onlookers including Kangaroos' chief of football Donald McDonald, assistant coaches Brett Allison and Shane Watson, welfare manager Neil Connell and vice-captain Drew Petrie feared the worst.

"I originally thought 'Oh no, I've done something bad', but it looks as if it won't be what I thought. I think Todd Goldstein and Leigh Adams have done similar injuries already this year. It obviously hurts when you do it, but I could be right for next week," Warren told kangaroos.com.au after having his ankle strapped heavily following the match.

North Melbourne director of medical services Steve Saunders was on hand to immediately assess the seriousness of the injury and quickly put Warren's mind at ease after a close examination.

"He just landed awkwardly and rolled his left ankle outward. So he has strained the ligaments on the outside of his ankle and we'll get a scan done on it tomorrow but it's not looking too bad at the moment so hopefully he may not have to miss a match," Saunders explained.

Before the injury in the third term, Warren had snared three goals for the match and looked set to kick many more.

"I had to sort of play a different role with Ben McKinley and Cam Pedersen playing in the AFL this week but it was nice to kick a few. I just wish I could have stayed out there for the entire time because the side could have used the extra players."
